        L.V. Hightower High School
Fort Bend Independent School District, Missouri City, Texas
The design of the L.V. Hightower High School is truly unique and innovative.  The goals,
concepts and values of the educational program were the driving forces that produced a
facility considered by many to be a prototype for schools of the future.
The challenge was to depart from an outmoded institutional structure and create a modern
and inviting atmosphere to motivate and enhance learning. The new facility is designed as a
“marketplace” or “village”, which creates a sense of community.
All of the buildings are constructed of steel structural columns, beams and bar joists with
sloping metal roofs.  The exterior facade of the buildings feature brick veneer with
contrasting brick bands.
The school's main entrance features a two-story space with an exterior entry canopy finished
in brick and stucco, and covered by a gazebo-like dome.  Glass-enclosed stairwells located
throughout the facility are a unique feature of the Hightower  High School.  A mall-like
terrazzo student street connects various departments and leads to the front entrance, which
is accented by green braces.  The student street is well-lit by a linear, translucent skylight.
