Villa Serena (DePelchin Faith Home-1913)
Houston, Texas

Villa Serena is the original historic site of the DePelchin Faith Home completed in 1913. It was
designed by the noted St. Louis architectural firm of Mauran and Russell.
The building served as an orphanage until 1938. It was chartered in 1893 and named as a
memorial to Kezia Payne DePelchin, a pioneer in the field of social work in Houston.
After many years of renovation, demolition, and additions, we were presented with the
opportunity to rehabilitate this building into upscale condominiums.  Each day brought a new
discovery as we peeled off layers of building additions, multiple ceilings, and eventually
uncovered the original body of the existing 1913 structure.  SPA worked closely with Andrew
Kaldis, our Historical Consultant, to ease the project through the Texas Historical Commission
submission process.  The architectural design of the roof soffit and arched windows are
dominant elements of this historic building. The home was converted to fifteen distinctive
historic condominiums in 2002. This facility was awarded the 2003 Good Brick Award, an
award honoring historical renovations.
