        Thurgood Marshall High School
Fort Bend Independent School District, Missouri City, Texas
Thurgood Marshall High School, Fort Bend I.S.D.’s newest High School is truly unique and
innovative.  The goals, concepts and values of the educational program were the driving forces
that produced a facility that has served as a prototype for previous and future High Schools for
the District. The challenge was to depart from an outmoded institutional structure and create a
modern and inviting atmosphere to motivate and enhance learning. The new facility’s student
street is designed as a “marketplace” or “village”, which creates a sense of community.  Food
Courts and outdoor seating areas were provided to encourage student gatherings and school
spirit. The building is constructed of steel structural columns, beams and bar joists with sloping
metal roofs.  The exterior facade of the building features brick veneer, spilt-faced block with
contrasting band colors that create an attractive yet traditional looking appearance. The
school's main entrance features a two-story curved cantilevered exterior entry canopy finished
in stainless steel.   This stainless steel clad entrance gives the school the look of a 21st
Century structure and serves as a beacon to draw students and the public to the school’s main
entrance. Glass-enclosed stairwells located throughout the facility are a unique feature of the
Marshall High School.  A mall-like full length student street connects various departments, leads
to the front entrance, as well as to the Field House and athletic fields.  The student street is well
lit by a 200 foot linear translucent skylight that provides natural lighting, thus reducing the need
for artificial lighting.
